Scientific American’s Proof of the Paranormal

In the end, I guess Margery Crandon did, in fact, share conclusive proof of the paranormal, whether Harry Houdini liked it or not.

The term fraud is constantly used when speaking in terms of spiritualism and mediumship. Of course, this is not to say that psychic mediums and spiritualism as a whole are fraudulent by nature. It’s just that it’s nearly impossible to separate the truly gifted from the extravagant yet mundane.
Take, for instance, the story of the Fox Sisters—two young mediums whose work marked the beginnings of the spiritualism movement here in the United States. Now it’s worth mentioning that these sisters were in fact gifted, just not in the way you might think.
You see, after years of traveling the country, holding seances in front of countless crowds, it was discovered that the Fox sisters built their careers on misdirection. I guess, instead of second sight, these girls were blessed with a few double joints and a propensity for sleight-of-hand.
Suffice it to say, the field of mediumship is riddled with performers just like the Fox sisters. Sure they are entertaining and talented in their own right, but at the end of the day, the vast majority are just ordinary people who hope to one day accomplish extraordinary things.
Notoriety was likely the driving force behind these theatrics. I mean, the pursuit of fortune and fame would have almost certainly blurred the lines between what’s normal and what’s paranormal. Which in turn gave legitimate mediums somewhat of a bad name.
But what happens if the roles are reversed? If untold riches and public interest were offered in return for proof of the paranormal? It’s an interesting concept, don’t you think?
Well back in the 1920s scientific American certainly did. Which is why they ultimately decided to put the idea to the test. In exchange for $2500, this publication was asking for proof of psychic phenomenon. Oh and at least according to Margery Crandon, proof is exactly what they found.
I know, it’s a bold claim to make, but it was made nonetheless. So let’s take a closer a Margery’s story to see if she could in fact put her money where her mouth was.

The perfect ghost story to share within the light of a fire's glow during this, the darkest time of the year.

It has long been a holiday tradition to tell ghost stories on Christmas Day. I know it sounds sort of silly when said out loud, but trust me on this. Today is a lot more chilling than you might think.
This practice spans over hundreds of years, dating back to a time when paganism was still quite popular throughout Europe. Although, instead of on Christmas Day, these ghost stories were shared around a blazing fire during the sabbath called Yule.
For some context here, this feast is celebrated during the Winter Solstice--or rather the shortest and darkest day of the year. During Yule, it's quite common to burn a traditional Yule Log as a metaphorical yet practical way to fend of this vast darkness and the bitter cold that often comes along with it.
Now even though times have definitely changed, there are some aspects of the Human Spirit that will always remain. In other words, just as we do today, our ancestors too loved to share ghostly tales within the warmth of a fires glow. And what better time to tell these stories than on the darkest night of the year?
Of course, as Christianity became more and more popular, Yuletide traditions began to shift. But the connection between Christmas and chilling stories of the great beyond remained ever-present in our holiday celebrations. In fact, as someone who maintains an eclectic sort of spiritual beliefs myself, burning a Yule Log has been tradition in my own home. And well we all know that I love a good ghost story.
All of this is to say that I have a Christmas tale to share with you. Although, be forewarned, this story is anything but merry.

I think it goes without saying that I spend a great deal of time researching different hauntings. And I'd be willing to bet that you'd say the same about yourself. I mean if you're listening to a podcast like this then you definitely have an appreciation for the spooky and the macabre.
Now given our shared interests when it comes to this field as a whole, we've likely all heard the more notorious stories. We, of course, know all about the Conjuring house and the Amityville haunting. We've spent a great deal of time researching the Stanley Hotel and Winchester Mansion.
But it wasn't until quite recently that I came across the story at the center of this week's episode. Which evidently is the most famous haunting that we have never heard of.
Now not unlike many of the haunts that we've discussed throughout the course of this past year, this particular case has been subjected to a great deal of skepticism. Although many of the previous stories were criticized by unconvinced third parties, in the case of this haunting, the doubt was felt by those who experienced the activity firsthand.
That fact alone makes this one of the most peculiar stories that I've ever heard. I mean, I can certainly appreciate an air of objectivity when approaching claims of the paranormal; but at the same time, the activity that this family witnessed had been pretty much undeniable since the start. And yet, they went to extreme lengths to debunk their experiences. Well, that is, until they captured proof.
So let's go ahead and peel back the layers of this haunt. Because, in all honesty, that isn't even the half of it. And at least from where the Lee family is standing, their story is one that's too bizarre to be true.

It’s one thing to tell a ghost story, but it’s a whole other thing entirely to share your evidence with the world.
